Dr. Evan Wood: The war on drugs has failed

The international war on drugs has been an abysmal fiasco, leading to increased violence and failing to stem the growth of the drug trade despite its enormous expense to taxpayers, writes UBC professor of medicine Dr. Evan Wood in the National Post.
Furthermore, Dr. Wood cites data indicating that the spread of blood-borne diseases like HIV and hepatitis has been exacerbated by the criminalization of drug use, as opposed to a focus on rehabilitation, treatment and harm reduction at the policy level.
Dr. Wood, who works with drug addicted individuals in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, compares the criminalization of drugs today to the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s with respect to the way organized crime has capitalized on it, and recommends both increased emphasis on harm reduction and the legal regulation of marijuana.
