Director, Experimental Medicine Program

The Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), is seeking applications for the position of Director, Experimental Medicine Program. The UBC Experimental Medicine Graduate Program is the largest graduate program in the Faculty of Medicine (FoM), serving all faculty members in the Department of Medicine (DoM), and many other clinical departments who supervise graduate students in M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs. This position requires a time commitment of 0.2 FTE (1 day per week) and is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to the faculty.

Reporting to the Head, DoM, the Director is responsible for the development and implementation of the overall educational goals and plans of the Program. The Director oversees the work of the Senior Program Assistant, who works closely with staff at the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FGPS) and supervises the activities of a half time program assistant. The Director is also responsible for, and regularly consults with, the Experimental Medicine Program Committee, composed of faculty representing the various departments and divisions of the graduate program.

The Director oversees admissions into the program via UBC’s online system. He/she will also oversee the distribution of awards and other funds from FGPS, including 4YF awards and funds from the Graduate Student Initiative. The Director does this in consultation with the program committee. On an annual basis (usually in June), the Director is expected to review activities of each student in the program, with face to face meetings scheduled at least in the first year of each student’s enrolment in the program.

The successful applicant will have extensive knowledge of the type of projects undertaken by M.Sc. and Ph.D. students working in a diversity of biomedical research areas. The ideal candidate will also have some knowledge of the activities undertaken by the FGPS, and must familiarize themselves with FGPS policies.

The successful applicant is expected to have demonstrated excellence in research in a field under the general umbrella of Experimental Medicine, based on grant and publication success, and preferably to have supervised graduate students in Experimental Medicine, or in a closely related FoM graduate program.

The successful candidate must be a PhD or an MD with proven record of graduating Ph.D. Students and be at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

The successful candidate will receive an honorarium which will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The appointment may commence as early as January 1, 2018 or upon a date to be mutually agreed.
