Canada Excellence Research Chair in Precision Cancer Drug Design

The Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia (UBC) is seeking a senior scientist eligible to be nominated for the approved Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Precision Cancer Drug Design, and appointed at the rank of Professor with tenure.  The CERC program is designed to attract and support the highest caliber of researchers and scholars to Canada. This unique and exciting program awards chairholders and their research teams funding of $20 million over seven years in support of research in areas of strategic importance to the Faculty of Medicine and Canada.  World-class researchers are invited to apply for the Precision Cancer Drug Design position at the Vancouver Campus.

As a faculty member and CERC chairholder, the successful candidate will be expected to lead a strong, externally-funded and internationally-competitive research program in anti-cancer drug development and implementation in precision oncology.  They will be instrumental in strengthening the Faculty of Medicine and UBC’s participation to accelerate: (i) structural resolution of proteins that drive treatment resistance, and (ii) computer-aided screening and design of chemicals inhibiting these targets.  This will include fostering interdisciplinary research activities across the UBC campus, with the aim of strengthening UBC’s strategic initiative to advance cancer research, human health and genomics.  The successful candidate will be expected to supervise postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, collaborate with other faculty members, and actively participate in service to the Department, University, and academic/scientific community.

Candidates must have a PhD, MD, or equivalent, have a record of excellence in teaching, and be an internationally recognized leader of a large multidisciplinary research program, with at least 10 years of internationally competitive research experience in the areas of cancer therapeutics, drug discovery, structural biology, and in cryo-electron microscopy.  It is expected that the successful candidate will qualify for and be offered a full-time appointment at the rank of Professor in the UBC Faculty of Medicine, although researchers at earlier career stages are welcome to apply.  An appropriate academic Department in the Faculty of Medicine will be identified at the time a successful candidate is selected.

The anticipated start date is July 1, 2018 or upon a date to be mutually agreed.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and is subject to final budgetary approval. Competitive start-up, relocation, housing assistance and infrastructure development funds will be provided.
